You all saw the parody commercial that went viral last week for Goldie Blox. The building toy geared at girls. It took shots at the original song by the Beastie Boys and aimed to tear down gender roles while inspiring creativity. I am all for those things, as are the Beastie Boys, but I have to say I am TEAM BEASTIE on this one, as is Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and Talib Kweli.
As has always been their policy, they will not allow any company to profit off of their music in advertising, which was also late member MCA’s last wishes described in his will. Goldie Blox did exactly that and had the gaul to sue the rap group first. The fucking nerve.
This is Ad Rock and Mike D’s open letter to the company and I back it.
Like many of the millions of people who have seen your toy commercial “GoldieBlox, Rube Goldberg & the Beastie Boys,” we were very impressed by the creativity and the message behind your ad.
We strongly support empowering young girls, breaking down gender stereotypes and igniting a passion for technology and engineering.
As creative as it is, make no mistake, your video is an advertisement that is designed to sell a product, and long ago, we made a conscious decision not to permit our music and/or name to be used in product ads.
When we tried to simply ask how and why our song “Girls” had been used in your ad without our permission, YOU sued US.
Also, I have been in the toy industry as a designer for the past 5 years and it is widely known that the Goldie Blox toys aren’t very fun. You can tear down gender roles all day, but in the end, your toy that was meant to inspire, honestly, just sucks.

How To Make an MF DOOM Mask for Under $20
I went to the local Party City yesterday and came across a “Centurion Helmet” in one of the aisles. I looked at it and did a quick double take saying, “Whoa! That’s the MF DOOM mask!” Well, almost. It was made of rubber and a full helmet, not just the faceplate like DOOM wears. I purchased it for $15 and modified it to look just like MF DOOM’s mask. If you like it, here’s how to make your own!
You will need:
Carefully cut the top and back parts of the helmet off, leaving only the front part of the rubber mask in tact. Look up some photos of MF DOOM on Google image search to know what parts to cut-off and what parts to leave alone.
Cut a piece of elastic that will fit snug to your head. Do not cut a piece that is too small or else the mask will fit too tight to your face. Staple each end of the elastic to opposite sides of the mask and you are done!
The mouth area of the mask covered too much of my top lip, so I cut off enough to match the actual mask that DOOM wears. If you’re an MF DOOM fan and not too worried about owning an actual metal replica, this cheap version looks very close to the actual thing and you can make it just in time for Halloween.

For those that don’t know, CHS is short for Closed Heart Surgery, my old Hip-Hop project I started with my friend back in 2005. I released 2 albums on iTunes under that name, The Unloved and The Blue Girl Diaries. My latest album, I Am Rocom, released under my emcee name, Rocom and dropped a few months ago.
CHS only lasted as a duo for about 2 years. The other emcee in the group, Ross G, had to give up rapping for his career in the medical field. As an artist/designer, I was able to continue making music in my free time. I continued making tracks as Closed Heart Surgery for the next 2 years, but decided it didn’t make sense without Ross. I wanted the music to represent the person making it, me, Rocom. Hence, I just go by Rocom now, not Closed Heart Surgery.
CHS had its own identity, branded as “Emo Rap” and wasn’t as broad in range. Making music as Rocom makes my style and future-track possibilities endless with no specific branding to adhere to.
Either way, I still make music and appreciate any fans of CHS that have stuck with me this long. There’s a handful of you out there and I appreciate you very much.
